Scherly Leon, MD is a board-certified physician in Internal Medicine. In June 2016, she completed Nephrology Fellowship at State University of New York at Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY. She received her medical degree from State University of New York at Stony Brook and completed her residency in Internal Medicine at New York-Presbyterian/Queens. She also holds a Master of Science in Biomedical Science from Barry University.
As a Haitian immigrant who was brought to the United States at a young age, Dr. Leon is strongly passionate about patient education, health advocacy, public policy, and health disparities among disenfranchised populations. In 2014, Dr. Leon served as a Rush University Global Health Fellow where she traveled to her native Haiti to provide critical care to the most vulnerable among us. This experience further developed her commitment to leveraging her professional and personal acumen to include working with underserved populations both within and outside of the United States. She currently works as nephrologist in Harlem, NY.
Dr. Leon is also active in several professional and community organizations. She is a member of the American College of Physicians and American Society of Nephrology. She served on the policy board of the American Society of Nephrology as an intern, allowing her to engage with members of Congress and other high level stakeholders in her capacity as a policy fellow.Dr. Leon was pleased to be a member of the 2015 inaugural class of the Nephrology Social Media Collective Internship with the Nephrology Journal Club. Recognizing that technology can at once serve as a tool that either includes or excludes disadvantaged populations, Dr. Leon uses platforms such as Twitter and Facebook to disseminate information on the issues she is passionate about as well as to network with like-minded professionals.
Her perspective is often sought after on these online mediums. In 2015, Marie Ennis-O’Connor, Digital Media Strategist and Social Media consultant, highlighted her as a “Doctor to Follow” on Twitter.Dr. Leon enjoys being a part of meaningful connections brought about by mentoring, encouraging others to achieve their goals. She also loves spending time with family and friends, cooking, and traveling.
